HOT CHOCOLATE

Mexican Hot Chocolate Puck & a Molinillo

RECIPE & SONG

While Mexican hot chocolate may seem exotic, making it is not difficult.
If you like to sing while you cook, this rhyme is popular with Mexican children everywhere:

  • take 4 ½  tablespoons of chocolate powder, or crush a chocolate puck (a pressed mixture of sweetened cacao nibs), in a pot with the molinillo
  • pour in four cups of milk, and slowly simmer stirring occasionally until the chocolate has melted
  • when completely melted, place the molinillo between your palms and spin  vigorously for a few minutes until it’s good and frothy. The rings on the bottom of the molinillo twirl around whipping the beverage into a foam. (No Mexican chocolate is acceptable that is not foamy).
Bate, bate, chocolate,
tu nariz de cacahuate.
Uno, dos, tres, CHO!
Uno, dos, tres, CO!
Uno, dos, tres, LA!
Uno, dos, tres, TE!
Chocolate, chocolate!
Bate, bate, chocolate!
Bate, bate, bate, bate,
Bate, bate, CHOCOLATE!
